1  About Crypto Facilities

What is Crypto Facilities?

Crypto Facilities is a professional trading platform for derivatives on digital assets. We are a London-based company.

What can I do with the platform?

You can trade digital assets long and short with up to 50x leverage, hedge price risk or safely store your bitcoins using our insured, blockchain-settled storage solution.

Are you regulated?

Our Futures are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Do you have an affiliate program?

For every new client you refer, we will credit your account 50% of your referral's transaction fees for the first 2 years. You can retrieve your personal referral link in your Account view on the Affiliation tab.

2  Opening an account

What is the process?

Once you have signed up, fill out the forms in the Verification tab in your Account view and click on submit. We will review your information and usually get back to you within a couple of hours.

Do you service U.S. residents?

We currently do not service U.S. residents.

3  Safe custody

How do you store my bitcoins?

Your bitcoins are held with Elliptic Vault Limited, a London-based, KPMG-accredited custodian. Elliptic stores your bitcoins on physically secured, offline servers and has obtained insurance from an A-rated underwriter for the USD value of the bitcoins they hold.

How can I be certain that you have not lost any of my bitcoins?

In your Account view, the Blockchain tab shows a list of the addresses in which your bitcoins are held. The sum of bitcoins shown here adds up to your total portfolio value (i.e. your bitcoin deposits plus or minus any profit or loss from trading). Since this figure may change continuously, we update your bitcoin balance on the blockchain every Wednesday. This serves as proof that we hold all your bitcoins in a segregated account.

How do you store digital assets other than bitcoin?

Digital assets other than bitcoin are held by Crypto Facilities in secure, offline wallets only.

4  Futures and Turbo Futures

Why should I trade Futures?

Trading Futures can be advantageous in a number of ways compared to trading the underlying asset directly: Futures allow benefiting from price increases as well as declines, provide financial leverage, can be used to hedge price risk and are associated with low transaction fees.

What instruments do you list?

We currently list Futures and Turbo Futureson the U.S. Dollar price of bitcoin, Futures on the U.S. Dollar price of Ripple XRP and Futures on the bitcoin price of Ripple XRP. Futures come with 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 quarter, 2 quarters and 3 quarters maturities. Turbos come with 1 week and 2 weeks maturities.

Instruments are described in more detail here.

What does a typical trade look like?

You think that the bitcoin price will increase and buy a Bitcoin-Dollar Futures at $500. The bitcoin price actually does increase and you are able to sell the Futures at $600. You have made a profit of $100 which is paid to you in bitcoin (at the new bitcoin price, this translates into a payment of approximately 100 / 600= 0.17 bitcoins).

Which maturity should I trade?

It depends on your trading objective. For instance, if you want to profit from a price move over the next couple of days, you might want to trade a shorter maturity (e.g. 1 week), which usually have the greatest liquidity. If you want to hedge your risk for a couple of month, one of the longer maturities might serve better.

What happens if I hold a position until maturity?

Your position will be cash settled at the price set by our daily reference rates. You can see a history of all previous settlement prices here, together with tick data calculation detail of each settlement price.

Do you have a "socialized loss" system, "claw-backs" or something similar?

No. If you buy, we bilaterally match you with a seller, and if you sell, we match you with a buyer. If you make a profit, this profit will come from you counterparty. If you make a loss, that loss will go to your counterparty. We manage the margin of our and your counterparty in real-time and transfer any profit or loss.

What is the difference between Futures and Turbo Futures?

The Bitcoin-Dollar Turbo works exactly the same way as the Bitcoin-Dollar Futures, only that it allows for higher leverage. It is geared towards short-term trading, rather than putting on a long-term position. We currently do not list Turbos on digital assets other than Bitcoin.

What is my risk when trading Turbos?

Trading Turbos is riskier than trading Futures. Due to the Turbos' high leverage (50x), you could be stopped out and lose your margin due to a small price move. To manage your risk, you should use less than the maximum 50x leverage and monitor your position closely. You also need to be comfortable with a higher level of counterparty risk.

Why do Futures prices differ from the spot prices?

In mature financial markets, this price difference is determined by technical factors such as interest rate differentials, dividends or storage costs. In the case of bitcoin and other digital assets, the price difference is mostly driven by supply and demand imbalances. For instance, bitcoin Futures have generally traded at a premium to the spot price in the past. This indicates that there is a high demand to buy bitcoin on a leveraged basis.

What is the price difference right now?

On the Analytics page, the charts on the Forward Curves tab show the absolute price difference between Futures prices and the spot price as well as the percentage difference, scaled to one year.

5  Cash accounts and margin accounts

What is the difference between cash and margin accounts?

Your Crypto Facilities account comes with different sub-accounts, which are either cash or margin accounts. If you make a deposit, it will arrive in a cash account, and you can withdraw only from cash accounts. You own two cash accounts:

CASH ACCOUNTS
  • Bitcoin
  • Ripple XRP
  • If you wish to trade an instrument, you first need to make an internal transfer from a cash account to the margin account that belongs to that instrument. You own a margin account for each instrument we list:

    MARGIN ACCOUNTS
  • Bitcoin-Dollar Futures (account currency: XBT)
  • Bitcoin-Dollar Turbo (account currency: XBT)
  • Ripple-Dollar Futures (account currency: XRP)
  • Ripple-Bitcoin Futures (account currency: XBT)
  • What is the reason for segregating accounts?

Any bitcoins or Ripple XRP that sit in your cash accounts do not count as margin, meaning you cannot lose them if a trade turns against you.

Deposits made to one of your margin accounts count as margin and could be lost if a trade turns against you. Margin accounts are separate for each instrument to assure that there is no spill-over effect between positions in different instrument. For instance, assume you have a long position in the Bitcoin-Dollar Futures, as well as a position in the Ripple-Dollar Futures. If the bitcoin price declines, your Bitcoin-Dollar Futures position may get liquidated but this will have no effect on your position in the Ripple-Dollar Futures.

Margin accounts are completely independent - if you are margin called in one account, this has no effect on the other margin accounts. You can decide yourself how much margin you want to allocate to each margin account (minimum margin requirements apply).

    6  Margining

What is your approach to margining?

For each margin account, we calculate your portfolio value by adding the margin account balance to the profit or loss of open positions. We then calculate the margin requirement for open positions and open orders. If the portfolio value is greater than the margin requirement, the account is fully collateralized.

What happens if the portfolio value of one of my margin accounts falls below my margin requirement?

You may hit a margin threshold such as maintenance margin. In this case, you will receive an email asking you to close some open positions or to deposit additional funds into this margin account. If you do neither, some or all of your open positions may be liquidated. Positions in any other margin account will not be affected.

The margining system is described in more detail here.

What are the Initial Margin requirements?

The Initial Margin requirement represent the amount of bitcoin or Ripple XRP that you need to have at least in your margin account to buy or sell one Futures or Turbo Futures:

    Bitcoin-Dollar Futures Bitcoin-Dollar Turbo Ripple-Dollar Futures Ripple-Bitcoin Futures
    Long Position
    0.2000 XBT
    0.0204 XBT
    1,429 XRP
    0.0300 XBT
    Short Position
    0.1429 XBT
    0.0196 XBT
    1,111 XRP
    0.0300 XBT

Margin parameters are described in more detail here.

    Is there margin netting?

There is margin netting within a margin account but there is no margin netting across margin accounts. For instance, if you have a long position in one maturity of the Bitcoin-Dollar Futures and a short position in another maturity, there is margin netting. However, there is no margin netting between Bitcoin-Dollar Futures and Bitcoin-Dollar Turbos.

Margin netting is described in more detail here.

How can I monitor my margin?

In your Account view under Margin Accounts, select a margin account to see a margin-o-meter that shows your current portfolio value in relation to the different margin thresholds. Ideally, make sure the needle stays in the green area. If it goes into orange, you need to take action.

    7  Indices

    What indices do you calculate?

We calculate indices to estimate the profit and loss from open positions and to determine the reference price at which positions settle at maturity. For the first purpose, we calculate real-time indices for various currency pairs. For the second purpose, we calculate daily, volume-weighted reference rates.

The following table shows the indices we calculate, their usage and constituents.

The indices are described in more detail here.

Where can I see index price histories?

On the Analytics page, select the Indices tab.

    8  Trading interface

There is a lot of information on the Trading page. Please explain.

The top table of the Trading page shows an overview of the available Futures and Turbo Futures with information such as last price, bid and ask price, your current position and contract specifications.

The order entry section allows you to enter an order and submit it to the market. We support various order types (see below).

The section in the lower middle shows your open orders, your open positions and your trade history.

The vertical tables on the left and right show the order book and last trades in the instrument you have selected.

How do I switch between instruments?

In the top table of the Trading page, select the instrument you would like to trade, e.g. Bitcoin-Dollar Futures. Next, click on a ticker symbol to select a maturity. The remainder of the interface will then display information for the selected instrument.

How do I submit an order?

Make sure you have selected the right instrument on the Trading page. The large blue bar shows your current selection. Then enter the number of contracts you would like to buy or sell. Depending on your order type you might have to provide additional information, such as a limit price. You can auto-populate the limit price field by clicking on a price in the order book.

Whenever you change your entries and hit enter, the margin information on the right of the order entry section will update. Check that your Initial Margin requirement is smaller than your Available Funds and click on buy or sell.

How do I cancel an order?

If you want to cancel an order that has not yet been matched, click on "Cancel" in the Open Orders tab. You can also cancel all your open orders at once by clicking the "Cancel All Orders" button.

What order types do you support?

We support market (MKT) orders, limit (LMT) orders and stop (STP) orders. You can select either type through the three buttons on the left of the order entry section.

If you use a market order, your order to buy or sell is matched immediately at the best available price. Use this order type with care as this price may be unfavourable to you. For your protection, we will not match your order at a price more than 1% above the best ask or 1% below the best bid. This means that your order may be only partially filled.

A limit order allows you to set the maximum/minimum price at which you buy/sell. If this price is "not good enough" to be matched with an existing order immediately, your limit order is added to the order book. We recommend using limit orders to control the worst price at which an order can be matched.

A stop order allows you to limit your losses from an open position or to add to your position if the price has moved in your direction. You have to provide two prices for a stop order, a stop price and a limit price. The stop price represents the market price that, if reached, will trigger your stop order. The limit price represents the worst price at which your order can be matched.

EXAMPLE: STOP-LOSSThe current Futures price is $500. You have a long Futures position and want to limit your loss if the price declines. You submit a stop sell order with a stop price of $450 and a limit price of $440. If the Futures price falls to $450 (defined as a trade actually occurring at this price or lower), your stop sell order is triggered at a limit price of $440. Your Futures position will then be sold at a price of $440 or higher, provided there is sufficient demand.
EXAMPLE: STOP-BUYThe current Futures price is $500. You have a long Futures position and think that if the price increases to $510, it will likely go all the way to $550. You submit a stop buy order with a stop price at $510 and a limit price of $515. If the Futures price rises to $510, your stop buy order is triggered at a limit price of $515. You will then buy additional Futures at a price of $515 or lower, provided there is sufficient supply.

How do I use the Trading View Charts?

On the Trading page, click on the chart icon at the right end of the blue bar to open a full screen Trading View Chart. In the top left box, you can select the maturity you want to display and specify the candle stick granularity. You can zoom in and out of the chart using your mouse wheel or scroll by clicking on the chart and moving your mouse.

Trading View provides a lot of functionality such as indicators (e.g. Bollinger Bands), trend lines or adding additional instruments to the same chart.

    9  Configuring account settings

What do I need to do to start trading?

In your Account view on the Settings tab, set up either SMS 2FA or Google 2FA (or, even better, both). Google 2FA will protect your account from unauthorized logins. You will need either SMS 2FA or Google 2FA to authorize withdrawals.

    What is 2FA?

2 Factor Authentication (2FA) is a process that generates one-time codes on the fly to greatly enhance the security of your account. Even if your account password is compromised, your account will still be safe, provided that you do not share your 2FA codes with anyone. You can have your 2FA codes delivered either by SMS or through Google Authenticator.

What storage solution should I choose?

We recommend that you leave the default selection of "Insured & Settled Account" in your Account view on Settings -> Settlement. Your bitcoins will then be stored by Elliptic and are insured by an A-rated underwriter, and you can track them on the blockchain. Digital assets other than bitcoin are held by Crypto Facilities in cold storage only.

Can I configure what kind of mails I would like to receive?

In your Account view under Settings -> Email Alerts you can configure your email notifications. For instance, you can switch off notifications for logins or receipt of deposits. You cannot switch off certain notifications, such as warnings that certain margin thresholds have been hit.

    10  Deposits, withdrawals and transfers

How do I deposit or withdraw bitcoins or Ripple XRP?

In the Account view on the Transfers tab, select the currency you would like to transfer (bitcoin or Ripple XRP).

If you would like to deposit, send a payment to the displayed deposit address. Deposit addresses are shown only once your account has been verified and you have set up either SMS or Google 2FA. Your deposit will then be credited to your bitcoin or Ripple XRP cash account.

If you would like to withdraw, enter a destination address, together with the bitcoin or Ripple XRP amount and a valid 2FA code. Make sure you enter the right address or your withdrawal may be lost. If you want to withdraw funds from a margin account, you first need to transfer them to a cash account.

How long does it take for my transfers to be processed?

Bitcoin deposits take 3 confirmations on the bitcoin network. Ripple XRP deposits are credited within a couple of minutes.

We store all deposits in secure, cold wallets only and manually verify each withdrawal. Processing withdrawals can therefore take a couple of hours but usually is faster.

How do I use my deposit for trading?

In your Account view on the Summary tab, click on "Transfer" next to any of your cash or margin accounts. In the pop-up box, select a cash account as the source account and make a deposit to one of your Futures or Turbo Futures margin accounts.

    11  Using the API

We provide a Representational State Transfer (REST) API which you can easily access through HTTPS requests.

There are two types of API methods: public methods and private methods. Anyone can use the public methods, for instance to retrieve market data. All you need to do is to paste the HTTPS request in your browser or write a piece of code that sends these requests automatically.

To access the private methods, you need to be a verified user and generate your personal set of API keys in your Account view under Settings -> API Keys. These keys are used to encrypt your communication with the API. You can then programmatically send orders to the market, cancel orders or see your trades history.

The API is described in more detail here.

    12 Disclaimers

Do you have a time window for scheduled maintenance?

Scheduled maintenance may occur between 07:00 and 07:15 UTC.

Does Crypto Facilities provide investment advice?

We do not provide investment advice and none of the materials on our website nor any of our correspondence with you must be interpreted as investment advice.

Is Crypto Facilities obliged to match my orders?

We reserve the right to refuse an offer to trade via the platform at our sole discretion. We also reserve the right to cancel a previously accepted, but unmatched, offer at our sole discretion or to roll back trades we deem to have happened erroneously.

How much money can I lose?

By trading on the platform, you can lose up to the entire deposits sitting in your margin accounts, for instance if a trade moves against you. However, you cannot lose more than that.

What are the risks associated with using the platform?

When using the platform, you may suffer a loss if prices move against you, if the platform becomes temporarily unavailable or otherwise malfunctions,if your trade counterparty does not post sufficient marginto cover any profits you make, if you want to close out a position prior to maturity but there is insufficient liquidity to do so or if you do not operate the platform correctly, for instance by withdrawing digital assets to an address you do not control.

    12  Support

If your question is not answered here, please send us an e-mail to support@cryptofacilities.com.

    1  Summary

Futures allow taking a leveraged long or short position in an underlying asset. Crypto Facilities currently lists the following Futures:

    LISTED INSTRUMENTS
  • Bitcoin-Dollar Futures
  • Bitcoin-Dollar Turbo Futures
  • Ripple-Dollar Futures
  • Ripple-Bitcoin Futures
  • Contract specifications are described in detail here.

To trade a Futures, margin needs to be deposited either in the form of bitcoin (for Bitcoin-Dollar Futures, Bitcoin-Dollar Turbo Futures and Ripple-Bitcoin Futures) or in Ripple XRP (for Ripple-Dollar Futures).

Futures come with 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 quarter, 2 quarters and 3 quarters maturities, Turbo Futures come with 1 week and 2 weeks maturities. Once an instrument reaches maturity, it is cash settled automatically. Positions can be exited at any time before maturity by trading out of the position.

2  Calculation of profit and loss

Profit or loss is always calculated in the Futures' base currency. For Bitcoin-Dollar Futures, Bitcoin-Dollar Turbo Futures and Ripple-Dollar Futures, this is USD. For Ripple-Bitcoin Futures, this is bitcoin. Profit or loss from a Futures trade is calculated as:

Profit or Loss in Base Currency = ( Futures Exit Price - Futures Entry Price ) * Futures Quantity

Crypto Facilities currently does not handle U.S. Dollars. Therefore, if a position in a Futures with USD base currency is closed out, profit or loss is converted into either bitcoin (for Bitcoin-Dollar Futures and Bitcoin-Dollar Turbos) or Ripple XRP (for Ripple-Bitcoin Futures).

    EXAMPLE: BITCOIN-DOLLAR FUTURES
  • Trading requires a bitcoin deposit to the Bitcoin-Dollar Futures margin account
  • Buy 1 Futures at 400 USD, sell 1 Futures at 500 USD. Profit is (500 - 400) * 1 = 100 USD
  • 100 USD profit is converted into bitcoin at the Bitcoin-Dollar Real Time Index (free of charge) and is credited to the Bitcoin-Dollar Futures margin account
  • EXAMPLE: BITCOIN-DOLLAR TURBO
  • Trading requires a bitcoin deposit to the Bitcoin-Dollar Turbo margin account
  • Buy 1 Turbo at 400 USD, sell 1 Turbo at 500 USD. Profit is (500 - 400) * 1 = 100 USD
  • 100 USD profit is converted into bitcoin at the Bitcoin-Dollar Real Time Index (free of charge) and is credited to the Bitcoin-Dollar Futures margin account
  • EXAMPLE: RIPPLE-DOLLAR FUTURES
  • Trading requires a Ripple XRP deposit to the Ripple-Dollar Futures margin account
  • Buy 1 Futures at 70 USD, sell 1 Futures at 77 USD. Profit is (77 - 70) * 1 = 7 USD
  • 7 USD profit is converted into Ripple XRP at the Ripple-Dollar Real Time Index (free of charge) and credited to the Ripple-Dollar Futures margin account
  • EXAMPLE: RIPPLE-BITCOIN FUTURES
  • Trading requires a bitcoin deposit to the Ripple-Bitcoin Futures margin account
  • Buy 1 Futures at a price of 0.10 XBT, sell 1 Futures at 0.11 XBT. Profit is (0.11 - 0.10) * 1 = 0.01 XBT and is credited to the Ripple-Bitcoin Futures margin account
  • Additional trade examples are provided here.

    3  Hedging

The Futures allow to almost perfectly hedge the price risk of digital assets. Assume you own 1 bitcoin and want to lock in its current USD value. By selling short 1 Bitcoin-Dollar Futures, say at 500 USD, you have locked in a price of 500 USD, no matter if bitcoin moves up or down.

EXAMPLE: PRICE INCREASESAssume you buy back the Futures at 600 USD. You incur a loss of (600 - 500) * (-1) = -100 USD which is automatically converted into bitcoin at the current bitcoin spot price (given by our real-time index). Assuming the spot price is 600 USD, your loss is -100 / 600 = -0.1777 XBT. Including your original 1 bitcoin, you now own only 0.8333 XBT. At the new spot price of 600 USD, this is still worth 0.8333 * 600 = 500 USD.
EXAMPLE: PRICE DECREASESAssume you buy back the Futures at 400 USD and that the new spot price is also 400 USD. Your profit is (400 - 500) * (-1) = 100 USD such that you receive 100 / 400 = 0.25 XBT. Including your original 1 bitcoin, you now own 1.25 XBT. At the new spot price of 400 USD, this is still worth 1.25 * 400 = 500 USD.

In these scenarios we assume that the Futures price exactly equals the spot price when the trade is exited. In practise, this will generally not exactly be the case such that you may end up with a bit more or less than 500 USD worth of bitcoins.

    4  Directional trades

Buying Futures will generally result in a profit if the price of the underlying increases:

EXAMPLE: LEVERAGED LONGAssume you buy 3 Bitcoin-Dollar Futures at 500 USD. The price increases and you exit at 600 USD. The spot price is also 600 USD. Your profit is (600 - 500) * 3 = 300 USD such that 300 / 600 = 0.5 XBT is credited to your margin account.

Selling more Futures than you own bitcoins will generally result if the price declines:

EXAMPLE: LEVERAGED SHORTAssume you buy back the Futures at 400 USD and that the new spot price is also 400 USD.

In both scenarios you can lose if the price does not go your way. Please make sure you understand the risks associated with trading on the platform.

    5 Maximum leverage

Maximum leverage is a function of instrument type (Futures or Turbo Futures), trade direction and the riskiness of the underlying asset:

    Bitcoin-Dollar Futures Bitcoin-Dollar Turbo Ripple-Dollar Futures Ripple-Bitcoin Futures
    Max. Leverage Long
    5x
    49x
    7x
    5x
    Max. Leverage Short
    7x
    51x
    9x
    5x

Margin rules are described in more detail here.

6  Order system and trade counterparty

If you offer to trade an instrument on the platform, this offer is matched by the trading system with another client's offer to take the other side of that trade. This means that Crypto Facilities does not act as trade counterparty.

Crypto Facilities has discretion over whether any offer to buy or sell is successfully accepted, matched or executed and we may choose at our discretion to refuse an order and such refusal is notified to you. This is to ensure that trades do not lead to market manipulation or other unfair circumstances.

We apply exactly the same margin requirements to all clients so you can rely on your counterparty being collateralized according to our margin rules at all times.

Open positions can be exited before maturity by submitting a buy or sell order that closes the position (i.e. if you have a long position you sell, if you have a short position you buy back). The party with which you do the exit trade will then take over your obligations vis-à-vis your original counterparty.

    7  Settlement

Positions that are held to maturity are cash settled at the price set by our daily-reference rates. Settlements occur on Fridays around 18:00 UTC.

    1  Summary

Our margining method is set up such that with a high degree of certainty, every counterparty posts sufficient margin to cover potential losses from sudden price swings.

We achieve this through independent margin accounts for each instrument type. The total portfolio value of each margin account is continuously estimated and compared to the margin requirement arising from the open positions and open orders in that margin account.

If portfolio value exceeds the margin requirement, the account is fully collateralized. If it falls below, you will receive a notification to deposit additional funds into this margin account and/or to close some open positions.

We do not permit any un-collateralized accounts on the platform, and all of our clients are subject to exactly the same margining requirements, including market makers.

The following sections describe how portfolio value and margin requirements are calculated and what happens if portfolio value falls short of margin requirements.

    2  Estimation of portfolio value

Portfolio value is calculated separately for each margin account by adding the account balance to the profit or loss from open positions held in the account:

Portfolio Value = Margin Account Balance + Profit or Loss from Open Positions

This calculation happens in real-time, and you can see the result on the Margin Accounts page.

To calculate the profit or loss from open positions, we estimate the current price of the instrument, deduct the entry price and multiply by the position size:

Profit or Loss from Open Positions = (Current Instrument Price = Instrument Entry Price) * Position Size

If there is more than one position in an instrument, this calculation is repeated for each position, taking into consideration the different entry prices.

We continuously update our estimates of current instrument prices based on current spot prices (as given by our real-time indices), and our estimate of the current forward premium or discount:

Current Instrument Price = Spot Price + Current Forward Premium or Discount

We use a proprietary algorithm to estimate the current forward premium or discount. This algorithm draws data from various markets that offer to trade instruments on the future delivery of digital assets. Our estimate of current instrument prices is used only for margin management and does not affect your actual profit or loss once a position is closed out or settled. We use our real-time indices for marking-to-market open positions rather than marking them to the last observed price to avoid the occurrence of cascading margin calls.

    3  Margin parameters

We use four different margin parameters to manage the credit risk of margin accounts. Each parameter is associated with a certain margin requirement per open long or short position and triggers certain action when reached:

INITIAL MARGIN (IM)This is the margin that is required to open new positions. If the portfolio value of a margin account falls below IM, all open orders that would further add to the risk of this margin account are cancelled immediately. Before any new positions can be opened, additional funds must be deposited into the margin account to bring portfolio value back above IM. Alternatively, some existing positions can be closed out.
MAINTENANCE MARGIN (MM)This is the margin that is required to maintain open positions. If the portfolio value of a margin account falls below MM, additional funds must be deposited into the margin account to bring it back above IM within 24h. Alternatively, some existing positions can be closed out. If portfolio value is still below IM after 24h, some or all of the open positions in this margin account are liquidated.
LIQUIDATION THRESHOLD (LT)If the portfolio value of a margin accounts falls below the Liquidation Threshold, some or all of the open positions in this margin account are liquidated immediately by executing the reverse trade on the market.
TERMINATION THRESHOLD (TT)If the portfolio value of a margin account falls below the Termination Threshold, all open positions in this margin account that could not be liquidated in the previous step are terminated immediately. This means that your contracts with your counterparties end and that your remaining portfolio value of this margin account is split between your counterparties.

Margin parameters are described in more detail here.

    4  Margin requirements

Initial Margin is applicable to open positions and open orders, but only if an execution of open orders will further add to portfolio risk. In this case, the IM requirement of these open orders will reflect that incremental risk.

EXAMPLE: NO IM CHARGEAssume you have an open long position of 2 Bitcoin-Dollar Futures and an open order to sell 1 Bitcoin-Dollar Futures. The IM requirement of the open long position is 0.40 XBT in this case. If the open order were matched, the new position would be long 1 Futures and the new IM requirement would be 0.20 XBT. The open order therefore does not increase portfolio risk and is not charged IM.
EXAMPLE: IM CHARGEAssume you have an open short position of 1 Bitcoin-Dollar Futures and an open order to buy 2 Bitcoin-Dollar Futures. The IM requirement of the open short position is 0.14 XBT in this case. If the open order were matched, the new position would be long 1 Futures and the new IM requirement would be 0.20 XBT. The open order therefore does increase portfolio risk and is charged the incremental IM that its execution would require, in this case 0.20 XBT - 0.14 XBT = 0.06 XBT. The total IM requirement is then 0.20 XBT (0.14 XBT from the open position and 0.06 XBT from the open order).

Whenever a new order is entered, the margining system checks if the execution of that order will increase or decrease portfolio risk. It also checks if the limit price can result in an immediate loss and if portfolio value is sufficient to cover this loss. The result of these calculations is displayed on the Trading page under "Initial Margin Buy" and "Initial Margin Sell" and determines if the order can be submitted or not.

    5  Margin netting

There is margin netting between long and short positions in the same margin account (i.e. the same instrument type) but there is no margin netting across positions in different margin accounts.

For instance, there is margin netting between a long Bitcoin-Dollar Futures position in one maturity and a short Bitcoin-Dollar Futures position in another maturity. The Total Margin Requirement will then be calculated as:

Total Margin Requirement = Max(Margin Requirement Long Positions, Margin Requirement Short Positions)

This means that the margin requirement of only long OR short positions is counted, whichever is greater. This applies to all margin parameters (i.e. Initial Margin, Maintenance Margin, Liquidation Threshold and Termination Threshold).

Why is this useful? Margin netting allows to efficiently exploit price differences across maturities. For instance, if you think that the price of Futures A is too high compared to Futures B, you could put on a short position in A and a long position in B. This will turn a profit if the difference decreases. Margin netting ensures that margin requirements for this position are not excessive.

    6  Termination and liquidation

Positions are liquidated if either the portfolio value of a margin account falls below Maintenance Margin and is still below Initial Margin 24h later or if portfolio value falls below the Liquidation Threshold.

Positions are liquidated by submitting an immediate-or-cancel limit order to the market. The limit price of this order is chosen such that if the order is matched, the remaining portfolio value of the margin account will not be negative. A liquidation in one margin account will not affect any other margin accounts.

EXAMPLE: LIQUIDATIONYou have an open long position of 1 Bitcoin-Dollar Futures, and the portfolio value of the margin account just hit the Liquidation Threshold, which is 0.09 XBT in this case. Assume the current Futures price is 400 USD and the spot price is also 400 USD. An immediate-or-cancel sell order with a limit price of 364 USD is submitted on your behalf. This limit price assures that you cannot lose more than (400 - 364) / 400 = 0.09 XBT from the liquidation, in which case the portfolio value of the margin account would be zero.

If a position cannot be liquidated (for example due to lack of demand on the market) and portfolio value falls further to the Termination Threshold, all open positions in the affected margin account are terminated at the same time. This means that the contracts between you and your counterparties end and that the remaining portfolio value of the margin account is transferred to your counterparties. This transfer is managed by choosing the termination price such that the remaining portfolio value will be zero. A termination of one margin account will not affect any other margin account.

EXAMPLE: TERMINATIONYou have an open long position of 1 Bitcoin-Dollar Futures and the portfolio value of the margin account just hit the Termination Threshold, which is 0.06 XBT in this case. Assume the current Futures price is 400 USD and the spot price is also 400 USD. Your long position is terminated at a price of 376 USD. This means that you will incur a loss of (400 - 376) / 400 = 0.06 XBT, reducing the portfolio value of the margin account to zero. Your counterparty will profit by the same amount.

Equivalently, if a position of one of your counterparties is terminated, the termination price is chosen such that you receive their remaining portfolio value.

The termination mechanism encourages market participants to sufficiently collateralize their margin accounts. It also compensates any party whose position has been terminated as a result of their counterparty not posting sufficient margin. For Futures, Termination Thresholds are chosen such that they cover approximately a 1 hour 99th percentile adverse price move. Therefore, if a trade closes because your counterparty is terminated, the compensation payment should enable you to replace your trade with no loss (and potentially a profit). For Turbos, Termination Thresholds are much tighter so that the risk of losses from terminations is larger.

Crypto Facilities does not benefit from liquidations or terminations and we strongly encourage our clients to adequately collateralize their margin accounts. It is your responsibility to monitor your margin levels continuously and to make sure that your portfolio value is high enough to prevent any liquidation or termination. By trading on the platform, you agree to your remaining portfolio value of a margin account being transferred to your counterparties if this margin account falls below the Termination Threshold. If one of your positions is terminated as a result of a counterparty not posting sufficient margin, you agree to forfeit any claims vis-à-vis that counterparty, apart from your share in their remaining portfolio value.

    1  Summary

    5  Margin parameters

Margin rules for Futures are chosen such that a margin shortfall between counterparties should occur no more frequently than approximately once every 10,000 hours (ca. 420 days). This is achieved by choosing the Maintenance Margin requirement such that a 1 hour price move is approximately covered on the 99.99th/ 0.01th percentile. Margin rules for Turbo Futures are less conservative and geared toward short-term speculation.

The following table shows margin requirements and resulting price move protection and leverage for each instrument. Due to the presence of wrong-way-risk between collateral and payoff in some instruments, margin requirements are asymmetric for long and short positions in these instruments.

    Fees

We charge a fee for all trades that are matched, settled, liquidated or terminated. The fee is charged in either bitcoin or Ripple XRP and is calculated as a fixed charge per traded contract..

    Fee CurrencyXBTXBTXRPXBT
    Maker0000
    Taker0.00080.000880.00012

Maker fees apply to trades that are not matched immediately with an existing limit order but are first added to the order book before they are eventually matched. Taker fees apply to trades that are immediately matched with an existing limit order that already sits in the order book

    NOTE ON FEES
  • Positions that are settled in final settlement are treated as taker trades
  • Positions that are liquidated are treated as taker trades
  • Positions that are terminated are treated as taker trades for the party that causes the termination and are associated with zero fees for the other party.
  • You can look up the fees you have paid in the "Fees" section of your Account History.

The REST API allows securely accessing the functionalities of your account, for example to request current or historical price information, check your account balance and profit or loss, margin parameters and estimated liquidation thresholds, place or cancel orders individually or in batch, retrieve open orders, open positions or trade history, or request a withdrawal.
